Holiness – What It Is and What It Isn’t
Blurb:
Holiness is one of the most misunderstood ideas in Christianity. Most people think it’s about behavior, separation, or perfection—but that’s not what Scripture actually teaches.

Holiness is one of the most talked about—and most misunderstood—truths in the Christian life.
For many, it means:
Holiness Starts With Identity, Not Effort
1 Corinthians 1:30 tells us something foundational:
Christ has been made our righteousness, sanctification, and redemption.
That means holiness doesn’t begin with what you do.
It begins with who you are in Him.
Holiness is not something you achieve.
It’s something you receive—and then learn to live from.
What Holiness Is NOT
To understand holiness, we have to remove what it isn’t.
1. Holiness is not behavior control
You don’t become holy by trying to avoid sin. That’s effort—not transformation.
2. Holiness is not separation from people
Jesus walked with sinners without becoming like them. Holiness doesn’t isolate—it remains untouched.
3. Holiness is not moral perfection
The law demanded perfection—and proved man couldn’t produce it.
4. Holiness is not external appearance
It’s not defined by dress, behavior, or outward image.
Holiness is not something you build from the outside in.
What Holiness Actually Is
Holiness is wholeness.
It means:
“You are complete in Him.”
That’s holiness.
Not striving—
but being made whole through Christ.
Why This Changes Everything
If holiness is behavior, you will always struggle.
If holiness is identity, everything shifts.
You’re no longer trying to become something—
you’re learning to live from what you already are.
Hebrews 10:14 says:
“By one offering He has perfected forever those who are being sanctified.”
That means:
How Holiness Actually Works
Holiness flows from the inside out.
Not:
behavior → identity
But:
identity → behavior
As you:
Holiness is a fruit—not the root.
Final Thought
God didn’t call you to become holy by effort.
He made you holy through Christ.
Now you live from it.
Not trying to reach it.
Not trying to earn it.
But learning to walk in what is already true.
